Sketch #3 and Some Thoughts on Learning by Copying

Some figure drawing practice done recently.

Most of these are done by copying from some comics that I read recently.

To me, copying is an important part of learning art, because it opens me up to new techniques and new method of expressions that I could apply in my own future artwork. In this practice, I try to study the poses and form of the characters. I could probably do another copy of the same comics to study the costumes, or the facial expression.

It is important to note that the purpose of copying is to study, not to copy blindly to achieve the exact likeness of other artist's artwork.

Practicing some lioness sketching last week.

I was procrastinating on Facebook.

Then I stumbled on this picture of some military guy. I thought the posture of this guy holding his weapon will be a good study. So I took up my brush pen and did a quick sketch.

Ok, back to procrastinating.......

Sketch #2

Quickly post one before work. Did not have time to scan it, hence took it using my phone camera.

Figure drawing is always challenging. Some with references and some without.

Some sketching practice. Done with 2B pencil.

It is fun experimenting with new art mediums. But it feels nice to return to something basic such as the pencil.

Play Time

Recently I bought some brush pens for drawing. They are much harder to control than pens. But the stroke variation achieved is both fun and challenging.

I named this post Play Time, because I had a lot of fun playing with this brush pen.

This is the brush pen I used. It is a calligraphy brush pen.

Life has been busy and I am finding it hard to sit down and draw. Sometimes when I sit down, I just stare at the blank paper in front of me and could not start.

When I am having difficulties getting back into drawing, or when I simply do not know what to draw, doodling always helps. Doodling helps to exercise my hand and my imagination.

Movie Stills Study

Some sketches I did while watching a movie last week.

This is a good way to learn some composition. It makes me learn to see how the director depict a scene in the movie. It is a good source of costume references too.

I find it is better to choose a movie that I have watched before to practice my sketching, because I tend to focus more on the movie instead of sketching if it is one that I have never watched before.

Book Shelf

It's been a while since I last updated this blog. Life has been busy and I am trying to slow down to make time to sketch/draw/paint. A sketch of my (messy) book shelf :)

Done with a Hero fountain pen. Took about 20 minutes.
